How are the paper beads made?
Newspaper, magazines, posters, and calendars are recycled and made into paper beads.
Long triangular pieces of paper are cut, and rolled onto a pin. The ladies then string the rolled paper beads with a fishing line, then they varnish and hang them to dry for a day or so. When they are dry, the beads are created into the jewelry pieces such as those you see for sale on this site. The colors of the beads reflect the colors on the papers used.

How do you communicate with the ladies in Uganda?
Back in 2007, we (Crafts for Peace and donors) sent the organizer a computer and a digital camera. Since then, we have communicated through emails at least 3x a week, and exchanged pictures. The ladies are able to send pictures of their new designs.

How are the ladies paid?
The ladies are paid through their organizer ( who is Ugandan) when the order is made. They are paid in full before the products are sent. They also are paid the prices they request for their items. Their organizer pays them as they deliver their products to her to be packaged.
If the artisan is unable to have transportation, the organizer picks up the products from her home.
Each lady has their own business, so they are paid per piece with the price they request. This is a part of the empowerment process.

Where do the artisans work?
Each artisan works at home. She is then also able to watch over her children. At times, the ladies pick a place to work together.
